I. Cấu trúc giả định với “As if/ As though”
II. Cấu trúc giả định với “Would rather”
Would rather ('d rather) = would sooner: Muốn
1. Cùng một chủ ngữ
a. Diễn tả mong muốn ở hiện tại:
S + would rather + (not) + V_inf + than + V_inf
= S + would prefer + to_V + rather than + to_V/ V_inf
= S + prefer + V_ing/ Noun + to + V_ing/ Noun
= S + had better + (not) V_inf: tốt hơn là…
Ví dụ:
He would rather eat cakes than eat candies. (Anh ta muốn anh bánh hơn ăn kẹo.)
b. Diễn tả mong muốn ở quá khứ:
S + would rather + have + V3/ed + than + ...
Ví dụ:
He would rather have gone to the supermarket yesterday. (Ngày hôm qua, anh ta muốn đi siêu thị.)
2. Hai chủ ngữ khác nhau
S1 + would rather + that + S2 + (not) + V_inf
Ví dụ:
I would rather that you call me tomorrow. (Tôi muốn mai bạn gọi cho tôi.)
He would rather that I not take this train. (Anh ta muốn tôi đừng bắt chuyến tàu này.)
S1 + would rather + that + S2 + V2/ed/ be → were
Ví dụ:
Henry would rather that his girlfriend worked in the same department as he does.
Jane would rather that it were winter now. (Jane muốn bây giờ là mùa đông.)
c. Diễn tả mong muốn trái với thực tế ở quá khứ:
S1 + would rather + that + S2 + had + V3/ed
Ví dụ:
Bob would rather that Jill had gone to class yesterday.
III. Cấu trúc giả định với “It’s high time” (đã đến lúc...)
1. Dùng với “To_V”
It is (high) time + (for somebody) + to_V + (something): đã đến lúc phải làm gì
Ví dụ:
It is time for me to get to the airport. (Đã đến lúc tôi phải đi ra sân bay rồi.)
2. Dùng với “V2/ed”
It’s time/ It’s high time + S + V2/ed
It’s high time we went home. (Đã đến lúc chúng ta cần về nhà.)
3. Diễn tả ý phê phán hay phàn nàn
Ví dụ:
It's about time you focused on your work. Everything seems so bad.
